Why Coaching Trumps Self-help Books

Think about your favorite teacher, and why they became your favorite. It’s likely because they connected with you on a level beyond that of instructor, in a way that made you feel something about what they had to say.

Relating is innately valuable to most humans. We value our relationships above all other values. Why? Because when we relate, we experience care, validation and empathy, we get to feel seen, be heard, and experience understanding. Imagine learning the piano or the cello from a book, or soccer, or basketball. A book can’t engage in reflections about your specific strengths or fortify your areas of weakness.

Relating will always be more valuable than information. When we relate to others, the information we absorb takes the form of actual experience. Unlike conventional school, motivational lectures, or self-help books, engagement with a coach, one-on-one or in a small group, creates an experience that impacts learning in a measurably superior way.

Experiential leaning research demonstrates that we recall 10% of what we read, 3 months after we read it. But we recall 65% of what we experience, 3 months after we experience it. That’s why coaching it is so powerful, because you’re relating and creating actual experiences that have better sticking power than books ever can.

I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand.

~ Confucius, 450 BC

Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I will learn.

~ Benjamin Franklin, 1750

There is an intimate and necessary relation between the process of actual experience and education.

~ John Dewey, 1938
