The Somatic Impact of ART

Updated: Apr 9

I wish I knew earlier how impactful creative muscles are to healing emotional suffering. As a CARE Partner it has been my priority to encourage everyone I work with to invest in ART— through self-expression or observation. Creativity is a powerful somatic tool to elevate imagination, deepen emotional insight, and experience powerful healing.

Artistic engagement offers more than just enjoyment; it allows us to safely explore the parts of ourselves that may feel hidden, afraid, or unsure. Creativity nurtures curiosity and helps soften the grip of fear, self-doubt, bias, and grief by giving voice to what words alone may not capture.

Reflective writing—lyrics to a piece of music, a painting, a sculpture, or any performance art can deepen our reflective process. Taking time to notice how certain colors, lyrics, or movements make us feel encourages inner awareness and builds emotional vocabulary. What memories are stirred? What stories surface? In this space of mindful reflection, the imagination becomes an ally in healing, inviting us to discover new possibilities.

Here are 10 meaningful ways to invest in art at home:

  1. Create a daily sketchbook or journal – Use it to draw, collage, or play with color.

  2. Set up an “art corner” – Dedicate space with supplies for spontaneous expression.

  3. Explore guided art tutorials online – Try. Sculpting, painting, or digital art.

  4. Play with music – Write a song, learn an instrument, or curate playlists.

  5. Use recycled materials – Turn cardboard, paper scraps, or fabric into creative projects.

  6. Display meaningful art – Use images, photos, or quotes that inspire or calm you.

  7. Try blackout poetry – Reinvent old books or newspapers to create poetic reflections.

  8. Dance like no one’s watching – Use movement to express what’s hard to say aloud.

  9. Cook as a creative act – Treat meals as edible art, play with color and presentation.

  10. Reflect on art you love – Write about a piece of music, film, or visual art.

Here are 10 ways to enjoy art with friends:

  1. Host a paint night – Set up canvases, at home for a laid-back creative hangout.

  2. Visit a local gallery or museum – Explore and discuss reactions to different pieces.

  3. Do a collaborative art project – Work on a canvas, mural, or scrapbook together.

  4. Attend a live performance – Go to a play, concert, or open mic together.

  5. Create a themed playlist – Collaborate on music that reflects a shared memory.

  6. Host a poetry or story circle – Take turns reading in a cozy space.

  7. Make vision boards together – We all know how to express hopes and intentions.

  8. Take an art class together – Pottery, printmaking, weaving—laugh and learn.

  9. Go on an art walk – Explore street art or public installations.
